Pap smears may no longer be called "annuals" if doctors follow new cervical cancer screening recommendations from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The group announced today that women should start getting cervical cancer screenings at age 21 instead of 18, and that women could wait longer between the screenings -- regardless of when a woman starts having sex. Women in their 20s with normal Pap smear results now should get screenings every two years instead of every year, and wo

IT WAS the day the music died for muscle heads, a slap in the face for boofheads, beefcakes and assorted exhibitionists. In a first for an Australian music event, organisers of the dance music festival Stereosonic have implemented a strict "tops on" policy, meaning that any bloke who removes his shirt - no matter how buffed - can expect to be ejected. "We've done a lot of market research and have been working with authorities to make the event safer and more user-friendly," John Curtin, from onelove mus

The men and women's cross country teams came into Saturday's NCAA South/Southeast Regional with one goal: to qualify for this weekend's national championships in Cleveland. They accomplished it by earning first and second place finishes, respectively. The men's team, ranked 13th nationally, won its meet convincingly.

Getting to the national championships is the focal point of the season every year. With our history of success, sometimes I fear that we take it for granted. It’s a tremendous accomplishment and it definitely makes the season feel successful   -John Curtin

Convicted and sentenced for sexual offenses, former Monroe County Republican state committeeman John Curtin is now out on parole and living with his mother and brother in Stroudsburg. Standing handcuffed in his county inmate uniform next to defense attorney James Swetz on Wednesday in Monroe County Court, Curtin smiled as his family and friends applauded after Judge Jerome Cheslock granted parole. Curtin in May began serving six to 18 months in Monroe County Correctional Facility after a jury in 2007 ha

Characterized by cold, muddy conditions, the cross-country UAA Championships resulted in a second-place tie for the men and a fifth-place finish for the women. "I think the guys should feel good about their second-place tie," Head Coach John Curtin said. "The women are disappointed and should be. It was their poorest performance of the year, and it came at an unfortunate time."

Auckland Reactor's connections scrapped plans for the race after an international phone hook-up this morning. "Mark (Purdon, trainer-driver) recommended we didn't run because of the standing-start and the owners, most based in America, agreed with him," syndicate manager John Curtin told the Herald Sun. "The standing-start has become a real problem for the horse and there's too many risks in going ahead. "We will now target the NZ Free-For-All on November 13 then go to Sydney for the Miracle Mile (N

An anticipated spike in public school enrollment has turned out to be less severe than projected just over a month ago, but some elementary classes remain oversubscribed, according to district's latest update. Nearly 60 more students than projected enrolled in Greenwich Public Schools this school year, according to school system's annual enrollment report, released Monday. That figure is less than half of the more than 170 students who were expected to exceed initial projections, as of Sept. 1, the day

Science class could get a lot livelier for public school students in the not-too-distant future. After several years of disappointing scores on state science exams, school officials have recently gone back to the drawing board with plans for an overhaul of the district's science curriculum. "We have been trying to tweak things over the last few years in science. But we're basically saying, at this point, that we need a structural overhaul. We need to change the curriculum," said former Assistant Super

After receiving more troubling data about student performance, the Board of Education is asking what needs to be done next. The discussion took place at last Thursday at the board's monthly meeting where Special Projects Manager John Curtin presented a report on the district's success system, which was established by the board in 2007. The findings he presented included 2008-09 performance data and looked at areas like student achievement, whole student development and improving teaching and learning.

Parents, teachers, students and community leaders would not have to wait until 2011 or later to make their opinions about the school system known to administrators, under a proposal being pushed by the superintendent. Schools chief Sidney Freund wants the Harris Interactive School Poll administered later in the 2009-10 school year. The Board of Education cut funding for the survey earlier this year to save about $38,000 in a 2009-10 budget that had to be trimmed by $4 million to help counter a town-wi
